Dear followers,
This is it! I've finished the very last module last week. I'm officially "done" although I have not yet received my certificate. But that should be in the mail before Christmas. I'm beyond excited and relieved that it went so well. Thank you all for following and encouraging me on this journey. I'm really happy that this blog was such a success, too! Now I will invest some time in finding a newsroom job/internship. Since I will have some days off soon, I have plenty of time for that. Thanks again! Jason

This week, I wanted to talk a bit about computer-assisted journalism. (I have not finished the module book yet, but I will be by the end of next week).
So what is computer-assisted journalism? Well, it's about being able to analyze and evaluate data for your news stories with the help of your computer. That's as simple as that. Needless to say, I quite useful tool and VERY necessary these days. In fact, it is hard not to use your computer for analyzing data if you do research in certain topics, for instance, politics. It's history goes back to the 1950s when data was analyzed for a US-presidential election, so they say. But "officially" it started in the late 1960s. Polling and surveying is one way to go about an investigative story. But you also need the tools to analyze huge volumes of information. This practice has been thriving for 15 years now. And journalists can probably never exist without it anymore. So I'm pretty happy that this is my last module! Should be fairly easy - a breeze. I can't wait to be finished soon, though. Come back next week! Jason Hello dear Journalism friends,
It's getting closer! One more module to go... but first, let me give you a short feedback on last week's module "Citizen Journalism". As many of you may know, it means that a public citizen is involved in gaining information on a story to some extent. It's is very far away from the traditional understanding of journalism! I've come to the conclusion, that this form of journalism is very questionable. But what do you think? Before I share my opinion on this, let me tell you that I've come to this conclusion after I researched a bit about this topic (beyond the module book). Although the module book is very well written, quite informative and you can tell that it's written by "experts", I just wanted to know a bit more about the actual practice of citizen journalism. I'm glad I did! Because that changed my perspective a bit. I guess it's the "real life example" that gave me valuable information to form my own opinion on this subject. Well, I'd like to hear some of your opinions out there! Send me a message or two. Next week will be another short talk about citizen journalism with concrete examples that I've found. Stay tuned! Jason Welcome back,
What a great week! I've started the new job which is awesome. I like my co-workers, I like what I do. It's great. So much better than before at the pizza place! The opining writing workshop is going well. I've researched quite about my topic - democracy - and I think it'll be great. Still working on some small stuff that I need to take care of before I start writing the whole thing. Most likely, I will be finished with this piece by the end of this weekend. Four more modules to go after that. I hope to be finished by the end of this year. That's the goal still. Today, I can't write much more else because I have to go back to work and still need to finish a few things for the workshop. I will let you know how it all went down. Next week: new module . Jason |
